Khimaira FAQs :: Web Design Tips and Resources :: Effective Meta Tags -How People Find You

Information

If you?re working on your homepage first, you?ll want to
use general keywords that describe your entire website?s
theme. When you begin to insert metatags for additional
web pages, your keywords will be more specific (tailored for
each particular page).

The below meta tag sections may not be in exact order as
they appear in the example, but you?ll know by looking at
your headings in ? ? which section you?re creating. It?s
fairly simple once you have your code inserted into your
HTML. I think that was the most confusing part for me,
since I had never seen HTML code before. It looks so
confusing. But, once you get that part, the rest is
pretty easy!

Title - Your Headline...

<title>101 Business Web Site Ideas - Free Article</title>

Your title is your headline. This is the first statement
the online user will see when your website? appears in
the search results at a search engine.

Write something simple, compelling, and and descriptive.
The title example shown sums all the facts up in just
a couple of short phrases. You can read the title of
this page and automatically know the following facts
about the website...

1. There are 101 ideas to be found by clicking on the
link to the website.
2. The 101 ideas are all for starting an online
business website.
3. The ideas are FREE!

Your title should be compelling enough to get your
reader to read your description below it. If it?s
not, then you or your web business will not benefit
one iota by getting listed under a top keyword in
a major search engine. So, please examine your
titles and descriptions for effectiveness so that
your listing won?t be a waste of time and effort.

Description - Close the Sale...

<meta name="Description" content="Need an idea for your new
Internet business? Go here for 101 free business web site ideas...">

Your description sentence(s) will be typed in
between the quotation marks and should be no
more than 100 to 125 characters. You will
limit your characters so that your ?complete?
description? will be listed and not cut off
in mid-sentence.

Your description should support your title
(or headline), restate the benefit, and close
the sale. In this case, ?close the sale? simply
means to get them to click to your website.
That?s all you need to accomplish with your
listing. If you try to sell the product, you?ll
lose out on many visitors. Your goal is to
get the visitor to your site so that he/she
will see your presentation?. Please keep it simple.

Notice in the ?description? example above, I
simply stated the same point as my title, but in
a different way. I asked the question ?Need
an idea for your new Internet business?? Implying
that if the reader answers ?yes?, then he/she
must click to go get ?101 free business web
site ideas?.

Special Tip: Always tell the reader what to
do, where to go, how to get there, etc. People
like to led. That?s why I wrote ?Go here for...?
This lets the reader know that if he/she clicks
on the link, they will go to my website to
get the information they?re looking for. And,
write your description in continuation, even
if it?s not a ?continued? sentence. This
implies that the reader will have to read
more to get the good stuff...

Just like that! Use your ... at the end
of every description to let your reader know
that it?s continued if they?ll just ?click?.

Keywords - The Key...

<meta name="KeyWords" content="business idea, home
business idea, small business idea, home based business
idea, new business idea, homebased business idea, internet
business idea, entreprenuer business idea, idea for home
business, new small business idea, online business idea,
free business idea">

Even though this section will not be seen
by readers at the search engines, this section
is vital to your website?s success. You?ll
use this section to target your readers and
to get your site listed under search words
that will bring targeted visitors to your site.

Choose your keywords wisely. Think of words
that your customers might would type in to
find you. This section will be examined by
the search engines to find out what your web
page is all about. So, you?ll want to be
as specific as possible. Write your keywords
according to your goal for your website.

I realize that you may think of hundreds of
keywords to list that would bring people to
your website, but for each keyword that you
think of, ask yourself the following question,
?Is the person who types this keyword in
a potential customer?? If not, then don?t
include it. You?ll be wasting valuable
space. Also remember that the search
engines will only list your web page under
keywords that are relevant to your specific
page. So, when you write keywords for your
homepage, make sure that your homepage has
the information within for those keywords?.

Keyword Writing Styles

There are several formats you can use to
write your keywords. I read many articles
that explain ? why one way is better than the
other. But I suggest that you try all
different ways as you list different pages
of your site. Use the above format with a
comma and a space between ? keywords for your
homepage, and then you can try different
formats as you list your other web pages.

Here are just a few of the keyword formats
I?ve tried, and all seem to work okay -
just depends on what kind of mood the search
engine?s in that day!

1. Comma and One Space Between Keywords (used
above) - business idea, home business? idea,

2. Comma and No Space Between Keywords - business
idea,home business idea,

3. No Comma and One Space Between Keywords -
business idea home business idea

I?ve also had some positive results by placing
a plus sign between words in some of my
phrases? such as home+business +ideas. And,
if you?re listing the proper name of a program,
organization, or a person?s name, you can
capitalize the first letter of the words.
For example?, I designed a page to target
?Netscape Composer? keyword searches because
my website offers a web design course that
teaches web design to beginners using
Netscape Composer. Here?s how a few of my
keywords looked for that particular page...
?Netscape Composer, netscape composer,
Netscape+Composer, netscape, composer,
Netscape, Composer?.

You can get very creative with your keywords.
Just keep trying different methods until you
find one that works.

Use your metatags as a marketing tool - a
free marketing tool. Remember that it only
takes a few minutes of your time to write
a metatag section for your web pages, and
also just a few minutes to list your web
page with the search engines. You can submit your site through the tools in your control panel.
