What are the FrontPage Server Extensions?
The server extensions are simply a series of CGI programs that allow you to take
advantage of the power of FrontPage for publishing, administering and authoring
your Web site. They also allow you to use WebBots.
If you are using FrontPage, you need to go to your Control Panel (yoursitename/menu)
and select the MSFrontPage option to install the Extensions.
It is highly recommended that you do not use both an FTP client and FrontPage to
publish Web pages at the same time. Using an FTP client may have adverse effects
on the FrontPage extensions, causing FrontPage publishing to no longer work
correctly. The exception to this is when you FTP custom CGI scripts into the
cgi-bin directory.
What are WebBots?
WebBots are the way that most of the interactive features of FrontPage are
enabled. Detailed information on using the WebBots is included with your copy of
FrontPage.
What are extensions, why do I need them and why won't they work?
FrontPage extensions are folders added to your directory that make FrontPage
components easier to use. For instance, all those handy little WebBots like hit
counters, discussion groups and the like usually have to be added using a CGI
script, and CGI can get messy. With the help of extensions, the WebBots take
care of that for you.
A warning about extensions: sometimes the installation doesn't work. Here are
some tips:
Try removing frontpage extensions and reenabling them.
Try to enable extensions at times of lower usage (between 10:30 p.m. and 10:30
a.m. EST.)"
If removing FrontPage extensions does not completely delete all your published
files and directories, manually remove all of the FrontPage directories (_vti_*)
and files from the site manager, and then reinstall and republish.
This is a rather frustrating problem, because there's nothing you can do. It's
up to the server for the most part.
Publishing Answers
If you want everything to work the way you designed it, you must publish your
site using the FP Publishing Wizard. NEVER FTP A FRONTPAGE Web under any
circumstances. Here are the steps to follow:
Step one:
Under the "File" menu, in FP Explorer, click on "Publish FrontPage Web." This
will open a little box with all your publishing options. Select the button that
says "More Webs." That will open another small box. In the space provided, put
in your domain name address as follows: http://yourdomainname.com/ Remember to
use all lowercase.
Step two:
Click "OK" on that box, and it will take you back to the first box. In the
Dialog Box, there will be the address that you just put in. Highlight it, and
click "OK".
Step three:
After the computer communicates with our server, it will prompt you to enter
your username and password. Enter the appropriate words and click "OK." From
this point on, publishing is all automated. FP will upload your site, fix any
navigation problems (usually) and integrate your site with the extensions, which
gives you all the options available with FrontPage.
Can I use FTP (file transfer protocol) with FrontPage?
Not if you are using any of the FrontPage features. The
only exception is when you upload a CGI script. If you do this, it will mess up
your site. Use the FrontPage Publishing Wizard to upload your pages.
